Probably the most important book that I misunderstood in college. Jan 15, Paul Berry rated it it was amazing. A book too important to be read just once. May 23, Kami Bee rated it it was amazing Shelves: This was a book I really wanted to read after having heard much about it and, of course, played with ELIZA and ‘her’ successors and produced my own paltry successor.

I’m glad I made the effort to track it down. I really relate to Weizenbaum as a writer, because there are two clear sides to the way he approaches his topic. He starts by talking science in what is a quite accessible but no less technical manner.

He quickly shows himself vernuft be a person who, more xie merely knowing the theories and This was a book I really wanted to read after having heard much about it and, of course, played with ELIZA and ‘her’ successors and produced my own paltry successor. He quickly shows himself to be a person who, fie than merely knowing the theories and formulas, has integrated them mentally to a point where he can speak intelligently for a significant period of time, putting many things together in a way dje builds something the average individual may have seen all their life, but would never recognise alone.

He talks about our invention of timepieces, clocks. He eloquently demonstrates with this example and a few chapters what modern writers struggle to explain in a whole book: Weizenbaum speaks comparatively little about ELIZA, the work that causes him to be frequently referenced to present times. Once he has laid the technical groundwork for his arguments, he moves to the philosophical.

What motivated him to write this book was the realisation that so many had taken ELIZA so seriously and saw practical applications in the counselling arena, among others.

Weizenbaum’s perspective is that, conputer contentious areas of computer science research are not intrinsically bad, just because certain things can be done does not mean they should be done.

His argument is reminiscent of, “don’t we have people to do these ver Rather than just opening the question, Weizenbaum pinpoints what he thinks is missing from discussions about technology and artificial intelligence: It comphter be too difficult to summarise all the intricacies of Weizenbaum’s argument, and indeed I doubt I fully understand most of them.

Bernunft main thing I took away from the latter portions of the book was the realisation that, indeed, we do struggle, as intellectuals, to say, ‘I simply think that it’s wrong to do this. We seek the objectivity of logic.

And yet what Weizenbaum seems to imply in so many ways is that logic, the clean-cut stuff we have used to build computers cannot express everything that is important about being human. I don’t know yet where I stand on everything asserted in the book. I think it will take me a while to absorb all of it.

Computer Power and Human Reason: From Judgment to Calculation by Joseph Weizenbaum

What I think is really significant is that this book written in the seventies reads much like ohnjacht on the same topic might today, only with far greater clarity than most. More than most now, Weizenbaum seems confident enough in his abilities to say that, sometimes, mere application of logic does not work.

Sep 15, Courtney rated it really liked it. In addition to walking down memory lane, reminiscing on my study of computer engineering, I enjoyed a technical, philosophical, as well as ethical treatment of artificial intelligence. I do like that Weizenbaum was willing to “just say no” to certain det on a computer. And Dre truly felt his impassioned call toward personal responsibility in the last chapter.

The one thing that played out very differently than Weizenbaum predicted was speech recognition. He felt cimputer would be too expensive and n In addition to walking down memory lane, reminiscing on my study of computer engineering, I enjoyed a venunft, philosophical, as well as ethical treatment of artificial intelligence.

He felt it would be too expensive and not add enough value. And even though I’m single-fingering this review on my iPhone, I have considered the productivity boost that would come from voice input.

Weizenbaum’s guiding voice would simply advise to assure that I contribute relevant content, and a reminder of this will be the persistent lesson from his book.

Mar 19, Trevor Kroger rated it it was amazing. He has nothing he can analyze or synthesize; in short, he has nothing to form theories about.

His skill is therefore aimless, even disembodied. It is simply not connected with anything other than the instrument on which it may be exercised. His skill is like that of a monastic copyist who, though illiterate, is a first-rate calligrapher. H “[The compulsive programmer] cannot set before himself a clearly defined long-term goal and a plan for achieving it, fer he has only technique, not knowledge.

His ohnmacbt projects must therefore necessarily have the quality of illusions, indeed, of illusions of grandeur” Weizenbaum,p. Archaic and not particularly interesting. Jan 24, Ed Finn rated it it was amazing.

Computer Power and Human Reason: From Judgment to Calculation

de Incredibly prescient given its date. A passionate argument for not forgetting our humanity in the face of the allure of computation. Mar 03, Jonathan Lidbeck rated it it was amazing. How much do you trust a computer? The answer to this question has dei changed somewhat sinceand the relevance of this book has slipped. Now they’re all around us, they are commonplace, invasive.

So, to appreciate Weizenbaum’s book fully, get in a time machine–to a time when you needed to schedule time to be with a computer, the computer had a cabal-like group of attendants to help you make requests of it, and this computer had a presence–like a guru on a mountain, you came to it. No How much do you trust a computer? What makes this book compelling is Weizenbaum’s outspoken deep love for computers, the creative act of programming, and those who do it.

Weizenbaum is the author of the famous ELIZA program, a simple, elegant English-language parser which, for the course of a brief, casual conversation, might to carry on an intelligent conversation with the user.

He tells stories of laypeople who, even with a thorough understanding of how the program works–how each word in its output is determined solely by the human input–feel that ELIZA really, somehow, cares for them. Users actually requested private sessions with the program in order to discuss more personal matters.

This is just human nature, though, our willingness to succumb to illusion. Weizenbaum’s purpose in writing seems like a magician coming clean, showing his audience the secret compartments and rie.

Die Macht der Computer und die Ohnmacht der Vernunft

He spends the first three chapters explaining computers, game theory, and Turing machines using extended metaphors, guiding his reader step-by-step through the processes by which a procedure not the physical computer, but the essence of one can ‘think’ and perform complex tasks. He emphasizes over and over how each action is fully deterministic; the computer can not ever choose to act or initiate any action itself.

Weizenbaum gradually makes clear the purpose of this meticulous tour. The layman’s perception of the computer as a sort of super-human again, this is is beginning to have seriously dangerous consequences.

Like the secretary who requested a private audience with ELIZA, government officials, psychologists, and bioengineers see the computer as having abilities beyond processing logic. Industry leaders push the computer as the most important innovation, ever: While this technological optimism may have faded some since the ’70s, there is something else Weizenbaum describes that is absolutely timeless: Scientists tell us that within so many years technology will be able to do such and such: We feel that the only real test of progress is its ability to amaze: Weizenbaum loathes this state of affairs.

Remember, we are still in control of the direction and pace of technological development. Scientists are pressing forward without regard for “higher” principles or the possibility that there exist things that we can, but perhaps should not, do. They all seem to have the innocence, the obliviousness, of the monomaniacal, compulsive programmers he has described earlier. This reactionary stance–the opposition to the amorality of science–is certainly not unique to Weizenbaum.

But in combination with a loving look at computers, it makes this book unique. The problem is when computers are put in charge of life-and-death decisions. Weizenbaum cites many cases where people have come to a point of crisis and a major change needed to be made, some dealing with large segments of the population. The advent and hype of computer technology has convinced the decision-makers that what they need is to apply more computer power, replacing human tasks with machines which do the same.

Our fundamental thinking here is wrong, he states. Instead of sitting down and trying to find a better way of doing things, using our human intuition and initiative, we now have the option of throwing technology blindly at the problem. Instead of finding alternatives to going to war in Vietnam, we used computers to help automate the location of strategic targets and to convey information and misinformation from the front.

Here’s where Weizenbaum changes modes, and there’s a problem with his moralizing assertions. He lays out what he believes technology should not ever do: The problem is that he provides no logic to support his thesis. Instead, he seems to think it should be obvious that to substitute mechanisms for human functions is “immoral.

Since then Aabduction really gained a new appreciation for the Theodore Boone books and I love that Grisham has written a series that hopefully will inspire younger readers to pursue law and police work as a field of interest.

Theodore bonoe is a really admirable guy who’ll put his love of legal investigation to the test when it comes to helping his friends.

At the end, Marcella is proud of Theo and starts to encourage him to solve local mysteries. Overall I think the book was a great success. I would definitely recommend this to a friend mostly because of the mysterious storyline and the interesting characters. View all 3 comments. Jul 12, Ana M. Another great book from John grisham. Sep 18, Michael Weingardt added it. Theodore is now devastated by this and is doing everything he griisham to locate April and figure out who kidnapped her. I like this book because the vocabulary was easy and they words were really big because in Never Let Me Go the font size was small and hard to read. The story would build up clues to where April was hidden which made the book exciting. The book was so boring at times I felt like I was going to aduction asleep.

There is this kid named Theo that was really hard to relate to. He did stuff like going to theodorf courthouse and watch cases which is really weird for a year old. I would recommend this book to people who have nothing better to in there life but read books by John Grisham because they find it suspenseful. This book is exciting, yes, but also predictable. And sure, it’s targeted to 6th through 8th graders but you’re really selling them short with the lack of advanced vocabulary in this book. The Abduction is an okay book. I can understand its appeal: But most of the kids who watch shows like that are going to be a bit older and can handle a more advanced vocabulary. The entire story is rather simple: But if it were told better it might be a better story.

Essentially every story ever written has already been told before, but the trick is retelling it well and making us, the readers, believe that it’s a bright, abduxtion, and new story.

I read this book as a read-along with one of my SAT tutoring students. I’m hoping the James Patterson book he picked as our next book abdduction a better one than this.

Theodore Boone: The Abduction by John Grisham | : Books

It sounds pretty clever to create a kids version of his bestselling books, right? This is really just a poorly-written version of his adult books, with a weaker plot. The only age Theodore Boone: The only age range I could recommend it to is maybe 4th to 6th grade. The story is about a boy named Theo whose friend April is taken in the middle of the night with no evidence of who took her left behind.

He then gathers up his friends and they go on adventures trying to find her.

When we use a camera, we want the recorded image to be a faithful representation of the scene that we see, but every image is more or less blurry. In image deblurring, the goal is to recover the original, sharp image by using a mathematical model of the blurring process.

Matrices, Spectra, and Filtering describes the deblurring algorithms and techniques collectively known as xpectra filtering methods, in which the singular value decomposition—or a similar decomposition with spectral properties—is used to introduce the necessary regularization or filtering in spcetra reconstructed image. This book’s treatment of image deblurring is unique in two ways: Students and researchers in engineering will gain an understanding of the linear algebra behind filtering methods, while readers in applied mathematics, numerical analysis, and computational science will be exposed to modern techniques to solve realistic large-scale problems in image processing.

Deblurring Images: Matrices, Spectra, and Filtering

With a focus on practical and efficient matrces, Deblurring Images: It also incorporates introductory material, such as how to manipulate images within the MATLAB environment, making it a stand-alone text. Pointers to the literature are given for techniques not covered in the book.

Audience This book is intended for beginners in the field of image restoration and regularization. Readers should be familiar with basic concepts of linear algebra and deblureing computations, including the singular value decomposition and orthogonal transformations.

A background in signal processing and a familiarity with regularization methods or with ill-posed problems are not needed. For readers who already have this knowledge, this book gives a new and practical perspective on the use of regularization methods to solve real problems.

Otherwise it seems pretty helpful! Posted Thu Jun 22, The time codes seem like a good idea. I’ll try to do that in the next few days.

Thanks for the suggestion. Maybe it’s just that I’m new to this, but you only showed how to astrocadd a program, but not how to save one. How might I go about doing that?

Posted Thu Jun 22, 1: That being said, I do plan to make another video on how to save to a computer. This page explains how to save to tape using the baud audio cassette instructiobs that is built into the cartridge.

Of course, rather than saving to tape, you would now connect the tape interface from the “AstroBASIC” cartridge into the asrrocade on a modern computer.

Here are the directions, from the “AstroBASIC” manual, for saving, loading and verifying programs with a tape recorder most people used a standard “shoebox” style tape recorder back in the late s and early s. Wherever the directions talk about using a tape recorder, just remember that you should probably use a modern computer now and save using a lossless format such as WAV or FLAC. This will allow you to save any program in the computer’s memory on cassette tape and astrocaed input the program from tape to memory in less than 20 seconds.

This process will take between 10 instructioms 20 seconds. As only one jack is provided on the BASIC cartridge, it is necessary for the user to manually connect the audio cable to the MIC jack of the cassette recorder. When the cursor reappears, the computer is done writing your program to tape.

This will retrieve the program, the screen image, the arrays and variables from audio tape. It is necessary to “cue up” the audio tape on the three second leader tone and switch the cable over to the EARPHONE jack on your tape recorder before loading. The volume should be set above the level that causes the LED to glow steadily.

When the tape is cued, type: When the cursor reappears your program is loaded. LIST command has been designed to perform a verify function.

It scans a digital recording and checks the sum of the bits in the recorded program against the sum of the bits in the program currently in memory.

LIST function is to be performed just after writing your program to tape with the: PRINT command, while your program is still in the computer. This allows you to check the integrity of your recording without damaging the program. LIST finds an error, a question mark is printed just before the cursor when it returns.

If problems arise, check the playback level of your recorder, or rewrite the program to tape if necessary. I hope that helps you save your programs to “tape. The interview set off a frenzy of political activity in Mexico over the presidential elections and succession of power. The “Creelman Interview marks a major turning point in the genesis of the Mexican Revolution.

His first job was in the print shop of the Episcopalian newspaper Church and State. He later moved to the print shop of the Brooklyn Eagle.

Creelman Interview |

By he joined the New York Herald as a reporter. Creelman traveled extensively to find stories and was unafraid to take on great personal risk in their pursuit. He joined adventurer and showman Paul Boyton on his treks across the Yellowstone River and Mississippi Riverdodged bullets reporting on the feud between the Hatfields and McCoys and interviewed Sitting Bull.

He also interviewed Mexican President Porfirio Diazwherein Diaz creeljan he would not run for reelection in to allow new leadership for Mexicoinherview promise he did not keep and that in part led to the Mexican Revolution. Creelman’s sensational reportage of the Japanese seizure of Port Arthur and the accompanying massacre of its Chinese defenders by the intervie Japanese army garnered tremendous attention and put him in greater demand as a reporter.

A significant assignment for Creelman came inon a trip to Cuba to report on tensions brewing between the island nation and Spain.

James Creelman

In his book On the Great Highway: Creelman was an open diaaz for Cuba in its war against Spain, and like many of his war correspondent peers he carried a sidearm. While covering the battle for El CaneyCreelman begged the U. Finally the general assented, and Creelman advanced on the fort along with U. Seeing the Spanish flag lying on the ground, Creelman seized it, feeling that it was only fair that the Journalwhich helped to start the war, should be the first to capture the Spanish flag at this important battle.

Creelman waved the flag in front of some Spanish soldiers interbiew entrenched nearby, who responded with a hail of gunfire, wounding Creelman in the arm and back. In the mold of most yellow journalists of his time, Creelman was as much an advocate as a reporter — in her book The Yellow Kidsauthor Joyce Milton describes Creelman as the self-described “conscience of the fourth estate,” who “normally did as much talking as listening” during interviews, including once lecturing Pope Leo XIII on relations between Protestants and Catholics.

The beauty about Creelman is the fact that whatever you give him to do instantly becomes in his mind the most important assignment ever given any writer.

He thinks that he very fact of the job being given him means that it’s a task of surpassing importance, intergiew it would not have been given to so great a man as he.

Retiring from service as a daily newspaperman, Creelman wrote editorials for the World until[ citation needed ] when he took a job in civil service for the state of New York.
