Apr 08, David Gallagher rated it it was ok Shelves: Despite the fact that Communication is a field I know pretty much everything about. On the book now before I get even more frustrated. However, this particular book was not written for rookies.

If you grab this book intending to learn about Communication, you won’t learn much. Far too complex a writing style and far too traditional a pattern of information presentation. I personally mcquai it hard to follow what McQuail was saying, and the book is densely written to a point where it becomes ridiculous. Notwithstanding, it’s a good addition to the many textbooks and books explaining the principals of the field of Communication.

A must-read for anyone interested in finance. If only the bankers had heeded this message a few years before, we might not be in such birss big mess today. By the time he has finished marshalling his evidence, his call to replace complex equations with something more like common sense sounds like, well, common sense. A Moral Approach to the Dismal Science.

His debunking of conventional wisdom is a treat. It should, by rights, spark a revolution in both investment banks and business schools. But, at the very least, it is required reading for anyone who would regulate the finance industry.

Apr 05, Fishface rated it it was amazing Shelves: A very powerful read that includes, not only the history of the Chernobyl disaster, but the history of the author who was brave reporero selfless enough to go back again and again over the course of 20 years to document it.

The photos range from historically significant, to inspiring, to heartbreaking; the text illuminates just enough of the story. Don’t miss this one. La testimonianza di Igor Kostin v Io lo posseggo in italiano, nessuna voglia di fare una nuova schedalibro. Oct 12, Dachokie rated it it was amazing Shelves: Ominously Graphic Account of a Forgotten Tragedy I was a sophomore in college on April 26, when the news of Chernobyl broke.

I remember sitting with friends in my dorm room when someone down the hall prompted us to adjust our television’s aluminum foil “rabbit ears” to see the news of an explosion at a nuclear reactor in the Soviet Union. Looking back, I recall two simultaneous reactions: But, being young cinfesiones in college at springtime on the other side of the world, the importance of Chernobyl as a newsworthy event dissipated almost immediately.

Over twenty years later, I finally took an interest in the Chernobyl accident The scenery in the games generated a craving to learn more about the mysterious events surrounding Chernobyl and the events that followed.

The problem I’ve discovered with Chernobyl is that it doesn’t seem to get the attention it deserves. While the accident is always referenced as the “worst nuclear disaster in history”, the event, 25 years later, still remains clouded in mystery and for many in the Western Hemisphere, it sadly doesn’t even register as a significant event just ask any college kid.

Making matters worse, there is very little photographic evidence to paint a clearer picture of the event and its aftermath other than the exploitation and exaggeration of Chernobyl by video game developers. This is why I found Igor Kostin’s book to be so valuable. Kostin was there, with his camera, in April and was so touched by the events unfolding that he kept coming back While primarily a book of photographs grouped into chapters dedicated to subject-matter, the pictures only tell part of the story.

Kostin’s words add a significant degree of depth and sadness to the visual presentation. The combination of words and photos paint a much clearer picture of the drama that unfolded at Chernobyl in kostin.cheenobil the eerie nature of Soviet Union using humans as fodder in response to a crisis.

Starting with kostin.chenrobil only known picture taken of the Chernobyl plant the day of the explosion a radiation-hazed aerial view igr the gaping hole in the No. The pictures speak volumes: Other photos document meager attempts of Soviet Union to contain the spread of radiation by burying villages and creating graveyards for the multitude of contaminated vehicles, but not the looters scavenging radioactive parts. Photos of an fe foal and a child suffering from mutations serve as examples of anomalies that may be linked to the disaster.

Kostin’s photos and accompanying commentary initially reveal a much more chaotic and desperate scenario that I have previously seen, but photos of his subsequent returns to the region reveal the eerie beauty of natures resilience a radiation warning sign amid a field of yellow flowers and man’s doggedness elderly villagers fearlessly returning to their contaminated villages.

Chernobyl: Confessions of a Reporter by Igor Kostin

Kostin even documents his own bout with radiation sickness following numerous visits to the region. While the pictures tell a story, it is the author’s brief introductions to each chapter and photo commentary that bring the pictures to life.

Sep 30, Kelley Goewey rated it it was amazing. A must-read if you’re interested in Chernobyl. Mar 17, Wes Metz rated it really liked it. Photojournalist Igor Kostin was flying in a helicopter over Chernobyl reactor number four or what was left of it within hours of the accident; his photos of the immediate aftermath, followed by more images in the subsequent months and years, are a moving portrait of the human tragedy brought on by the inherent flaws of the Communist system.

The courage of the men sent in to attempt to contain the radiation storm is incredible; the bravery of the ‘liquidators’ who would receive a lifetime dose Photojournalist Igor Kostin was flying in a helicopter over Chernobyl reactor number four or what was left of it within hours of the accident; his photos of the immediate aftermath, followed by more images in the subsequent months and years, are a moving portrait of the human tragedy brought on by the inherent flaws of the Communist system.

The courage of the men sent in to attempt to contain the radiation storm is incredible; the bravery of the ‘liquidators’ who would receive a lifetime dose in their allotted forty seconds on the roof of reactor three is unquestioned; the suffering of the citizens of Pripyat and of the villages and farms in the exclusion zone is ongoing.

In pictures and text, Kostin paints an unforgettable picture of the effects of human arrogance in the nuclear age. It’s a quick read and well worth the reader’s time. Dec 01, Chris rated it it was amazing.

Hades – Paranormal Book Summaries

I did not expect anything that happened. This particular angel themed book has taken me by surprise with each page turn.

The great descriptions really set the tone for the book and had a way of sucking you into alexsndra story. I found myself unable to put the book down! The description in the book for particular scenes on Earth and in Hades made you feel like you were there feeling the heat of the flames licking at you, the emotional distress of having been snatched away from your loved ones, and feeling the pressure of trying to make the right choice to protect loved ones.

What I really like about this series is that this book tries to show what real love is, not the material and physical lust that alexanfra mistake for love. In this adoenetto it shows the maturing process of those blinded by hormonal and physical love and finally seeing the light of the real love that binds two individuals together.

This book shows how some people go through different trials in their lives and the decisions that they make affect not only themselves but those around them as well. This book is a heart clincher and that draws you in, makes you feel the deep connections with all of the characters and you experience the same emotions they feel. I have thoroughly loved this book for all of the twists and turns that it takes you through, and it may be my favorite of the three.

Hades was a beautifully scripted book. The characters were well defined in this book, and there was no straying Bethany away from her virtuous core. In this book, Bethany finds herself being pulled down in the third circle of hell. Some of you might not know, but this is a take on Dante’s Inferno. There are nine circle’s of hell total in Dante’s Inferno, and Adornetto mentions the ninth circle being ruled by Lucifer himself. I know some have mentioned that this version of hell, which in the book avornetto referred to as Hades, was not in fact hell.

But if one has read Dante’s Inferno, and knows the reference, the third circle is the hell of Gluttony. This is perfectly portrayed in Adornetto’s version, and I feel the need to defend her.

I have personally read Dante’s Inferno, and others that may not understand the take she took on hell would do well to read some Dante. The story was well crafted, and intense from the start.

It was action packed, and there were moments where I though Bethany would lose, where things got so bad, you couldn’t see a way for her to get out, and then you’d be surprised, out of no where, at hadew she manages to survive.

And the most beautiful message in this book is that: If you thought Apexandra and Bethany’s love was beautiful in Halo, then you will love how deeply you see their love grown in Hades. Not even Hell itself can keep them apart. I cannot wait for the third book! One person found this helpful.

At only 18, Alexandra has alexanvra away all readers around the world with Halo and continues to do that with Hades, and later on adornetho Heaven, the third and maybe final book in the halo series. In the first book, Bethany Church, an angel, falls in love with Xavier which isn’t good to put it bluntly.

Jake Thorn, a Prince or Hell, arrives and tries to woo Bethany into his arms and instead gets banished by her brother Gabriel. Adornetto could’ve done so many things in Hades, so many different roads to take this story, but this was one I didn’t expect.

Different from so many paranormal stories, Bethany and her siblings, Ivy abd Gabriel, aren’t fallen angels, or Nephilim, but angels straight from up above. This fact itself makes it original I used to think that angels with halos adoenetto giant wings were pretty stupid. An angel kidnapped by a lovesick demon, and brought to hell. WHO has ever done that before?

Alexandra Adornetto

She was weaker than Kaniss, Juliette, Meghan, Nora, all of them. But really, you have to expect that. She isn’t that used alecandra the “evils of the world” that we see every day. But the fact that she was one step away from killing herself for just one glimpse of Xavier really did piss me off. I’m all for romance. Alexnadra desperation for one look? I loved the description of Hell because it’s so much more complex wait Everyone loves a little flash from the past, so when a certain ghost shows up and gives us a new insight of life, we’re all happy!

Alexandra Adornetto somehow adds moral with a ahdes fantasy at a young age and inspires so many o fus young writers that we can get published too! Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. In and out of the Cross-Cultural Classroom Closet: There is a gap in queer theory and higher education literature, regarding how queer university teachers negotiate their sexuality in cross-cultural classrooms. This ve moves to address this gap by examining the complex intersection between gay teacher identity and cross-cultural sensitivity, evident in the stories of two queer academics. Agents That Negotiate Proficiently with People.

Negotiation is a process by which interested parties confer with the aim of reaching agreements.

The dissemination of technologies such as the Internet has created opportunities for computer agents to negotiate with peopledespite being distributed geographically and in time. The inclusion of people presents novel problems for the design of autonomous agent negotiation strategies. People do not adhere to the optimal, monolithic strategies that can be derived analytically, as is the case in settings comprising computer agents alone.

Their negotiation behavior is affected by a multitude of social and psychological factors, such as social attributes that influence negotiation deals e.

Furthermore, culture plays an important role in their decision making and people of varying cultures differ in the way they make offers and fulfill their commitments in negotiation. Ryan Murphy as curator of queer cultural memory.

Directory of Open Access Journals Sweden. Halperin and Valerie Traub, ‘the personal and the social shame attached to eroticism’ is taken to task in relation to the larger contemporary discourse surrounding gay pride understood in terms of activism and cultural production, while being seen as a defining characteristic of queer history, culture and identity. Shame, as theorized by Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, Halperin and others, is predicated on a df issue of queer people ‘s access to discursive power, which Sedgwick herself had theorized in The Epistemology of the Closet.

Such a conceptualizing of queer culture and queer politics begs the interrogation of how queer shame is contained and negotiated in contemporary popular culture. One of the most successful apontaments working in film and television today, Ryan Murphy’s opus is marked by a constant dialogue with queer cultural artifacts. The excitement that his productions generate is typically predicated on his use apontqmentos queer cultural objects, especially as they are rearticulated for mainstream audiences.

This paper investigates the inherent shame of queer memory as embodied in Murphy’s show American Horror Story through reference and negotiation of queer icons, filmic traditions and on-screen bodies.

Utilizing queer and film theory as its framework, this paper treats Murphy’s queer vernacular as the uncanny that destabilizes conventions of both the horror genre and mainstream television, in turn legitimizing and exploiting ‘shameful’ queer categories such as trauma, excess, diva worship and camp through the language of popular television and the bodies that populate it. Finally, this essay evaluates the productive power of Murphy’s repository of ‘disgraceful’ bodily images-allegorical and literal-in furthering a critical remediation of the vernacular of queer shame.

Queering Black Racial Identity Development. We used queer theory to encourage readers to think differently about previous theories about Black racial identity development. Queer theory facilitates new and deeper understandings of how Black people develop their racial identities, prompting more fluidity and nuance. Specifically, we present a queered model of Black racial identity development…. Queer scholars and activists share a central predicament with critical management studies: That is, how can one make a critical difference without becoming embroiled with or turning into the powers that be?

This chapter offers suggestions for how to remain From Exclusion to Inclusion: Equal participation in paid employment is regarded as a basic entitlement within human rights discourse. Recent organizational studies highlight how the workplace can operate as a socially divided space for queer or non-heterosexual workers, depicting the workplace as a problematic site of sexuality-based discrimination and abuse.

This article focuses on the concept of leadership endorsed by an urban all-girls’ public school and how heteronormative ideas about female success were resisted by a group of the school’s gay students through gender performances and named sexualities. The author argues that queer students are gender projects that the school uses to define and…. Queering the fertility clinic. A sociologist examines contemporary engagements of queer bodies and identities with fertility biomedicine.

Drawing on social science, media culture, and the author’s own empirical research, three questions frame the analysis: In what ways have queers on the gendered margins moved into the center and become implicated or central users of biomedicine’s fertility offerings? In what ways is Fertility Inc. What are the biosocial and bioethical implications of expanded queer engagements and possibilities with Fertility Inc.? The author argues that “patient” activism through web 2.

Exploring heteronormativity in young people ‘s discourses about lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer issues and their implications for youth health and wellbeing. In Canada, the issue of creating safe and inclusive school environments for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer students has been in the spotlight. Several researchers and advocates have pointed out the positive effects of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer -positive policy frameworks on the health and wellbeing of all young people.

In this article, we take a critical approach to analyzing narrative findings from qualitative interviews conducted with youth in three communities in British Columbia, Canada: Using a Foucauldian Discourse Analytic Approach and Butler’s concept of Citationality, our analysis suggested that although explicit homophobia was largely absent from youth discussions, young people discursively constructed lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer identities and “communities” in ways that reified heteronormativity.

Youth made references to sociopolitical discourses of libertarianism and liberalism and to homonormative stereotypes regarding gay masculinity.

A few young people also alluded to egalitarian, queer -positive discourses, which appeared to interrogate structures of heteronormativity.

Since studies suggest a connection between the existence of institutional supports for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer students in schools and their mental and physical wellbeing, we conclude by considering the limitations and possibilities of these sociopolitical discourses in the struggle for sexual and gender equity, and how they might help frame future health-related, anti-homophobia policy frameworks in educational settings.

Discrimination causes health inequities for stigmatized groups. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer LGBTQ individuals, in particular, are at significantly increased risk for disparate health outcomes when they reside in states that fail to extend equal protections to them or that actively deprive equal rights to them.

Several states and the federal government have proposed or enacted laws that permit residents to discriminate against LGBTQ individuals. One such law, Arkansas’s Intrastate Commerce Improvement Act ofpreempts or prohibits local governments from enacting civil rights protections for LGBTQ individuals that are also lacking at the state level.

State laws such as Arkansas’s undermine local control, damage the economy, and create injustices that harm LGBTQ people. I set forth 2 constitutional arguments to challenge such laws, and I provide information to help advocates support evidence-based policymaking and prevent the passage of similar laws in their states. Queering School, queers in school: Full Text Available Queer studies of education have become a growing field with a range of theoretical and political positions and methodological approaches.

Moreover, research with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer LGBTQ kids is tightly connected to anti-homophobia, anti-transphobia and norm-critical activism. One of the key contentions within this field is what researchers and activists mean by ” queer ” in the context of education: Is it about using queer theories to critique forms and norms of education in a given sociopolitical context?

Is the language of homophobia and transphobia the best or even correct way to describe and analyse normative educational settings and frameworks? How can we study ‘ Queer ‘, or indeed, should we? Further, negotiating one’s disclosure is not only about to whom or how to disclose, it also means finding good Friendship, sexual intimacy and young people ‘s negotiations of sexual health.

This paper examines how young people ‘s friendships influence safer sexual practices. Interview data illustrate how friendships can support young people ‘s sexual experiences, concerns and safeties beyond the practice of ‘safe sex’ condom use. This is evident in friends’ practices of sex and relationship advice, open dialogue, trust and sharing experiential knowledge, as well as friend-based sex. Meanwhile, friendship discourse from selected Australian sexual health websites fails to engage with the support offered by friendship, or its value to a sexual health agenda.

Foucault’s account of friendship as a space of self-invention is considered in light of these data, along with his argument that microeconomja poses apontamentks threat to formal systems of knowing and regulating sex. Whether sexual or not, many close friendships are sexually intimate given the knowledge, support and influence these offer to one’s sexual practices and relations. This paper argues that greater attention to friendship among sexual health promoters and researchers would improve professional engagements with young people ‘s contemporary sexual cultures, and better inform their attempts to engage young people through social media.

Gender inequalities in schools have implications for life chances, emotional well-being and educational policies and practices, but are apparently resistant to change. This paper employs Judith Butler’s conceptualisation of performativity in a study of young people and consumption to provide insights into gendered inequities.

It argues that how…. Queer Pedagogy in Sex Education. While increased visibility of gay, lesbian, transgendered, and queer people in public settings, including schools, is certainly freeing for many students, critical questions concerning whether popular media depictions of LGBTQ identities serve to liberate students, or instead facilitate subtle strategies of containment and ghettoizing, are being….

Angelology (Angel , book 1) by Danielle Trussoni

Jun 16, Ellen rated it did not like it. Over the years, I’ve received student papers so awful, I’m tempted to just write, “Nice font choice” and move on.

For Trussoni’s sad book, my comment is “Nice cover. However, what a surprise. Not one of my GR friends has any mention of this book – not a review, not a to-be-read, and definitely not a wishlist pick. Several reasons come to mind. Overall, the book is a half-witted concoction clearly written in the hopes that it would become a movie, or rather t Over the years, I’ve received student papers so awful, I’m tempted to just write, “Nice font choice” and move on.

Overall, the book is a half-witted concoction clearly written in the hopes that it would become a movie, or rather the first in a series of movies, given that the book’s end signals a sequel. The Nephilim or fallen angels, who live in the midst of a somewhat Victorian-feeling society, apparently elude the notice of most mortals, despite their immense power and influence. Just how this is possible is not explained nor is angelology, which could have been somewhat fascinating, if pursued in any depth.

And, just as Maureen Dowd coined the term baldenfreude for men losing their locks, we could probably use the danjelle wingenfreude to describe the loss of wing breadth, luster, and thickness that some of the angels are experiencing.

And if the dilemma of Percival, the key male angel, sounds a bit phallic, it should. The description of Percival’s former wings in contrast to his mother’s flawless appendages is rife with envy and Freudian implications: His mother’s wings were gorgeous, shimmering, healthy, full-plumed. A gradation of soft color radiated from the tips, where the feathers were tiny and roseate, and moved to the trussnoi of her back, where the feathers grew large and glittering. Percival’s wings, when he’d had them, had been even larger than his mother’s, sharp and dramatic, the feathers precisely shaped daggers of brilliant, powdery gold.

That spot is reserved for Sister Evangeline, a remarkably flat and undeveloped character, whose destiny is evident by perhaps page 10 or so of this page book. The only remotely compelling sections were those in Bulgaria, particularly concerning Celestine and Gabrielle.

Just why in the hell I read this whole godawful mess can only be explained by major funkdom, when I read continuously including some awful literature and eat a lot of bubba-mycin chicken soup.

Angelology

trussomi The broad concept was really interesting, excerpting one of those weird bits of the bible and making it the basis for an otherworldly, fantastical story. But the characters are flat and the writing is dull — most of the first half of the book is scenes of people doing turssoni, and we get to read right along with them as they examine ancient historical texts and first-hand accounts of angelic encounters.

This is about as exciting as reading a musty old his This one kept losing stars daniflle it went. This is about as exciting daniekle reading a musty old history textbook can be, but leaves you ready for some action. Sadly, when the action finally does start up, the book quickly falls apart.

Danielle Trussoni clearly has zero skill in writing a thriller, and the frantic final third grows increasingly ludicrous and difficult to follow, with several poorly-staged battles between demonic creatures and old nuns and an anticlimactic The Da Vinci Code search for a hidden historical object that is simply there to pad out the story needlessly.

The writing is very sloppy and many confrontations don’t make much sense at one point the villain has a gun trained on the heroes but neglects to use it for no discernible reason, even as one of them slowly assembles a mysterious object that might spell the villain’s defeat. The ending springs a Star Wars-esque moral choice on the lead character pretty much out of nowhere and the book ends on a very sour note, clearly setting things up for a sequel that I would guess perhaps 10 percent of those who slog all the way through Angelology will actually bother to read.

Oh, and it’s going to be made into a doubtlessly terrible movie. View all 7 comments. Mar 15, Kevin rated it really liked it. Honestly, if I could give it 3.

Since I can’t, I’m rounding up, as a gesture towards giving the author the benefit of the doubt, expecting that the next book will be better. Angelology is a mixed bag. Personally, I find angel lore, and other mythologies, fascinating, and I thoroughly enjoyed the mix of Judeo-Christian and Greek myth, Talmudic scholarship and discussion of the Book of Enoch a personal favorite.

I understand this is the Ms. Trussoni’s first novel, her first book being a solidly non-fiction memoir. I believe that this is apparent in her writing style. Frankly, I found the narrative voice to be rather dry for a work of fiction, especially one of the fantastic variety, but perfectly in keeping, however, with the expected tone of a diarist.

It is also quite telling that the most compelling part of the book was the section detailing the personal memories of a young woman’s life and education in WWII-era France.

It was written in the first person, and the character, Celestine, was by far the most well-developed, and most distinctive voice in the entire novel. Trussoni is more comfortable, at least at the moment, with this style of narration.

The other characters in the book suffered somewhat from a lack of differentiation of voice; they all ran together and “read” quite similarly, from evil Nephilim to nuns, to aged angelologists.

This was something of an unfortunate impediment when trying ranielle identify with the various characters, and I hope that further work in fiction will help Ms. Trussoni better develop individual character voice. The author is, however, quite skilled in description and her world was very easy to visualize, often vividly so.

Unfortunately, her adeptness in this area overbalanced her lesser abilities in characterization and resulted in large sections of the book feeling overly expository, which was surprising, because the book had some truly exciting action bits.

Despite the book’s flaws, however, Ms. Trussoni really did succeed in drawing me in, particularly after the aforementioned truesoni engaging second section of the book, and left me looking forward to the next novel in the series.

She is clearly a skilled and talented author, and I expect that she will quickly develop better fictional narrative skills.

While I don’t believe the book is quite worth the hype, it is still well worth reading. View all 6 comments. I am so glad I found this on audiobook at the library. It turned out to be a very good medium for this story. I have to say that for a slow starter, I really got drawn into this book, and when it ended, I had separation anxiety! Two things kept me from giving this a five star rating: The slow, meandering start.

I was initially thinking, uh-oh, this might turn out to be a real snoozer. Boy was I wrong! The ending was a cliffie that really got my blood pressure up! I didn’t like the way this no I am so glad I found this on audiobook at the library. I didn’t like the way this novel concluded at all. I hate feeling like I’m being manipulated to read the next book in a series, and it felt that way.

I’d anelology read a book series that has books that danie,le and conclude in a natural way. Some resolution, but threads that encourage me to pick up the next book. That was so not the case here. I would have kept reading anyway, but now I feel like my arm is being twisted to read the next book.

Things I loved about daniellw book: The scholarly tone wouldn’t work for everyone, but since I am a bookworm nerd who likes to research topics that are of ttussoni, I could really get into the angelologists and their penchant for delving deeply into subjects in their field. And their subject knowledge. Most of the main characters were in one way or another scholars or people who really knew their stuff.

They spent their lives reading angelolofy immersing themselves in the past. That spoke to me. I loved the epistolary format, a significant portion of the book written as parts of journal entries and book excerpts. It was executed very well. The narrator was fantastic.
