Havelis are huge mansions built by wealthy marwari merchants around years ago. It may also be due to the fact that a French artist, Nadine Le Prince purchased a Haveli in Fatehpur some years ago and effectively made everyone known that the art of restoration could make this a viable business proposition. Her story is a beacon of shining light for Shekhawati. Typical tourists hoping for a quick glance of this region choose to visit Nawalgarh and Mandawa, being the most famous towns yavelis them all.

I was given a royal welcome and invited for a sumptuous lunch there. Shekhawati can be accessed by both road and train from Jaipur and Delhi.

It is hardly two-three hours drive away from Jaipur and around four hours from Gavelis. Five years ago, foreign tourists were making a beeline to visit this unknown part of rural Rajasthan. The story has changed since. Rich marwari merchants have been pouring money into Shekhawati making it a rapidly growing area. Tourism in a real sense has dwindled.

Touts abound near the famous haveli-turned-museums waiting to pounce on rich Europeans and can become a nuisance. The share of domestic tourists is rising and is mostly of the weekend variety. They are hardly interested in the history and frescoes and seem be simply crossing an item off their bucket list. I have been asked by my readers on twitter and instagram to write an article on Shekhawati for quite some time now. Spent 4 days here 5 years ago and Shekhawati still remains as one of the best places I have ever explored.

Seidways: Shaking, Swaying and Serpent Mysteries

Search the history of over billion web pages on the Internet. Well then, how would you like this? As far as magical books go this depends frirs how far their readers take them this one is almost about sex and drugs and rock ‘n’ roll.

Almost, but not quite. It is also about dragons, about cauldrons, and about the darker side of pagan religion andmagickin ancient Europe.

Full text of ” Jan Fries Seidways”

After writing Helrunar there was quite a lot of bizarre information left over, which just wouldn’t fit into a handbook of rune-sorcery. This information stewed in the pot for a few years. Then it asked for a place on paper, and here we go.

Some ofthis stuff is obscure, some is speculative. Very little of it pretends to be factual, unless the reader chooses to believe and make it so. I do not ask you to believe, instead, I would like to challenge you to do your own research, come to your own insights, and to construct your own working hypothesis as you go along.

This goes for the theories, but even more so for the practises. If you choose to experiment with the techniques described in this volume, let me remind you that you, and you alone, are responsible for what happens. Some of the practises are definitely not suited for everyone, most require a degree 6 First Word from the Cauldron of magical experience, and all require good health of mind and body. If you are a beginner in trance magick, I would strongly suggest that you master a few basic skills before attempting any of the techniques in this volume – skills like visualization, self-hypnosis, astral projection and earthing energies.

For these techniques you could consult my earlier books. More important yet is the ability to communicate with what might be called ‘the deep mind’, the ‘holy guardian angel’, the ‘fylgia’ etc.

This book is almost about sex, insofar as it deals with pulsation, with trances that excite and energise, that make the body shudder, sweat and glow. This is not the usual sort of sex, such as is commonly practised on Friday night so as not to interfere with the demands of the working week.

What we deal with are phenomena like lust and living flesh. Think of what Austin Spare termed ‘the new sexuality’, a concept that is miles away from simple male- female role-playing.

What Spare thought of was the sexual interaction ofthe T and the ‘all-otherness’, the lust of awareness in all of its forms, and the transcendence arising from going beyond. How about drugs then? Sorry, but this is not a book on what happens to people who get high on things cooked up in bathtubs and sold at street-corners.

It is more concerned with things that people cook up in their own brains, with the hormones and neurotransmitters which the brain produces naturally. I wouldn’t call such substances ‘drugs’, as all drugs arejust crude attempts to approximate the effects ofthe mind’s own elixirs. And rock ‘n’ roll? Can you sense the rhythm? There is a rhythm to trance work.

There is a rhythm in ritual, and there is a lot of rhythm in the shaking and swaying trances. Rhythm can stabilize awareness. It can change awareness, and some rhythms can lead your mind on ajourney to yourself.

And it’s fties book of exploration. A good many ofthe trance practises on these pages have been used by cultures all over the globe, starting, Sediways suspect, quite early in the Stone Ages. For a variety of frie, these trances have fallen out of use in Europe and in the ‘modern world’, which means that hereabouts people have to re-discover methods which seem new but are as ancient as they come.

A lot of cultures practice these trances in our day and age, which supplied me with a wealth of seidwats data. Few magicians are aware of what treasures can be found in a good ethnological library; if they knew, they would feel rather silly about their own vows of secrecy. Most of the great magical secrets have been published time and time again in the unlikeliest of places, but it does take an inspired eye to recognize them.

When the first European scholars studied the shamanic seances of Siberia, they were swift to call them a mixture of quack-doctoring and plain insanity.

Given their cultural background, what other conclusion could they fried Similar practices are well-documented from pagan Europe, sadly, they have been ignored for a long time. Ecstatic people have long been treated as if they were lunatics, and when the church came to power, it soon declared that the pagan ways go straight to Hell. The very sort of behaviour that many cultures seek in their healers and priests was jab to the Devil, and rigorously punished.

A body in trance can easily begin to sway, especially if the mind is busy elsewhere, and shaking and trembling are not far from this phenomena. I found it happening when I was a child. I used to draw pictures.

In the process, when pausing to consider the picture, I used to get extremely excited. This excitement expressed itself in trembling.

Many a time the hand holding the pen started the quivering, and often enough, the rest of the body joined in. They suspected brain damage, and had me examined by several doctors, who could not find anything wrong.

I soon got the impression hat shaking was undesirable, and began to struggle against it. It wasn’t easy, but for several years I managed to avoid frues. Then came magick, excitement and madness, and soon enough the shaking returned. I felt very uneasy about it at first, but when I learned that there are cultures which actually invite it as a sign of spiritual grace or total obsessionI felt compelled to allow it once more.

For some years I assumed that the shaking is a side-effect of intense mental activity. Then I learned that 8 First Word from the Cauldron it can work both ways – that intense mental activity can be a side-effect of shaking, and that one can lead to the other naturally. This led to the next question: At first, only a few people dared to experiment – Julia, Astrid, Gavin, Ruth – whose support has done much to make this book possible. They tried, they experimented, and developed their own access to shaking trances and inspired rituals.

They taught me about individual differences in shaking and swaying, and about the necessity fies develop one’s own working method. These experiences were the beginning of this book. Frkes this point, things became easy. All of a sudden a great deal of useful information turned up, such as books, films, recordings, dreams, and better still, people who had experienced the shaking one way or another, without quite understanding what was happening to them.

Some of my friends were kind enough to write oftheirexperience, such as Gavin W. Forthe same reason a lot of quotations have been included. If youreally wish to understand a phenomenon, the first step is to consider as many points of view as possible. Kenneth Grant offered some scintillating suggestions which helped a lot to fuse this book together and permitted me to quote from our correspondence, and Mogg and the Oxford Golden Dawn Occult Society gave me the chance to present the practise to a wider audience during the Thelemic symposiums of andwhen scores of people found that they could shake, trance, and enjoy it.

This book is a way of saying ‘thank you’ to all of you. A note on seething On these pages, I have occasionally taken the liberty to seidwyas the shaking and swaying trances frifs a shamanic practice of the north Germanic cultures which was called Seidr, or tries. I have some personal, and utterly subjective reasons for this use of the term ‘seething’, most of them having to do with the fact that the metaphor describes the shaking pretty well.

In this place I wish to point out that, as far as I know, there exists no full proof that the seidmages of the old north actually shook while they tranced, prophesied or projected glamours.

There are, I believe, some indications which make it likely that they did, but I don’t want to give the appearance of’fact’ when we are dealing with inspired guesswork. Very little is actually known about the activities of the seid-men and women of the pagan times. You’ll find an account of it, and my reasons for the use of the term ‘seething’ in the chapter ‘Seidr Under Midnight Skies’.

Notes on transliteration The correct spelling of Seidr is with the consonantwhich is pronouced like the ‘th’ in thorn. Besides describing numerous miracles of nature, the volumes offer an insight into Druidic belief and practice which is all the more valuable as Pliny had seen military service in northern Europe.

This adds a measure of personal experience to the account.

Speaking of Druidic rituals, Pliny gives that often quoted tale how mistletoe plants are cut from oak branches, which is not an easy feat as mistletoe tends to grow on poplar, willow and apple. Brief as the description is, it is still the only Druid ritual described in any detail by the classical authors, which goes to showjusthow little is known of Druidic ritual and custom. Pliny also describes some magical plants which have to be collected with great ceremony.

The plant ‘selago’, for instance, had to be cut without using iron, and was taken by the right hand which had to pass through the left sleeve. Before daring this operation, the Druid had to assume white clothing, wash the feet and make an offering of wine and bread. The plant was carried as a charm against every kind of evil. We do not know the modern name of’selago’, but there are quite a few seidqays which were carried as talismans right up to modern seidsays.

For instance a rowan twig can scare evil spirits and a small knot made out of a thin rowan twig can be set up to protect a house. Mugwort appears in the old English blessing of the nine herbs as ‘Una is your name, oldest among worts’, with power against ‘three and against thirty’, and the mountain or forest primrose, if carried secretly, jab act as a key to open the gates to the underworld, the hidden realm of the kings from under the hill.

Seidways: Shaking, Swaying and Serpent Mysteries by Jan Fries

St John’s wort, especially when taken at the kan 12 The Serpent Stone solstice St John’s Daywas well known to scare devils and demons into hasty flight. A loop of the plant, tied to the roof, was used to protect houses from lightning.

The root of the tall mullein had a similar reputation, provided it was taken on a Friday night between 15th August and 8th September, during a waning moon. Both ofthe dates are related to Mary, mother of Christ, and the time between them was known to be especially beneficial for the collection of magical herbs. Better known still was the fern.

Parts of the sdidways of fern used to seidqays carved into the shape of a crude hand or fist, which was carried as a talisman. A common European folk belief has it that the most potent of all talismans is the seed of flowering fern. Such seeds are known to bring fantastic good luck, wealth, fame and the ability to become invisible. However, getting them is not very easy. As you may known, fern has no blossoms and produces no seldways seeds, but spores.

To collect blossoms and seeds, you have to be exceptionally lucky.

Only on one midsummer night in a hundred years does the fern produces flowers and seeds, which develop in a few short hours and wither before sunrise. The would-be collector has to be at the right spot at the right time.

Results 1 to 3 of 3. This review is primarily written regarding the print version, which integrates much material from earlier Malhavoc psionics products. PDF versions are also available, some of which do not include the updated material, psuonics new material. In places I refer to these earlier reviews rather than repeat everything here. The links to my Mindscapes review follows. Overall, this provides many options for fans, depending on what they already might own or how convenient they feel it is to have revised material included.

The cover hyperconsciojs a bright orange background with a meditating or concentrating robed woman surrounded by fire. The illustration is by Malhavoc mainstay Kieran Yanner. The interior is black-and-white. Much of the art is drawn from previous works updated here but is of notably high quality; Yanner’s Lucid Cenobite illustration remains one of my favoritesbut Crossley’s new art is a nice addition to the previously existing work.

Hyperconscious: Explorations in Psionics

A Deeper Look Hyperconscious is organized into eight chapters. The first two chapters are devoted to the adventure. The third is an update of the Mindscapes psionic combat system. The remainder are new character options.

I will be limiting my commentary on material from Mindscapes and If Thoughts Could Kill ; for more in-depth information, see my Mindscapes review. Spoilers regarding the adventure follow. The adventure itself is interesting and moody. The adventure involves the threatening entity known as The Dark Pleafirst explkrations in the event book When the Sky Falls.

Those who found the Dark Plea intriguing will want to pick up Hyperconscious for further details on this enigmatic villain. The adventure happens in the wake of the destruction of explorationns so-called Oraculus, a site and organization that was exlorations source of great prophecies.

One of the exploratuons sages of the former Oraculus hired the party to eplorations to the hyprrconscious site of the Oraculus, where they discover the crater is a gateway to the so-called Shallows, a series of minor dream realms that the Oraculus used to draw its prophecy.

Successful players will discover that the seven seers of the Oraculus have been deceived, and are pawns in a plan by the Dark Plea reaching across time to ensure it is created. End Spoilers The mindscapes system only has minor tweaks from the system in Mindscapes: Since the Expanded Psionics Handbook includes psiinics of the changes introduced in Mindscapes such as removal of combat modes as a distinct ability of psionic characters and addition of feats to the psion, many of the changes that Mindscapes implemented are rendered moot.

For those not familiar with Mindscapesthe basic concept is that whenever two psionic creatures hyperconsvious near each other, a random “mindscape” which only psionic creatures can perceive springs up. Psionics can face off in hyperconsciouss in this imaginary landscape to gain real world advantages, such as bonuses to saving throws, damage resistance, damage bonuses, and so forth. These contents are elegantly handled by having each combatant make a d20 combat mode check, using a new modifier that the Mindscapes system introduces, which is on the same scale but not necessarily the same as saving throws.

All in all, it makes a quick to resolve “psionic combat” system that is directly pertinent to other psionic power uses, even for more physical classes like psychic warriors. There are a few tweaks from the Mindscapes: A Psion’s Guide version of the rules.

For example, in those rules, the terrain and combat mode types referred to hyperocnscious ability score, but the characters’ ability scores were never referred to in any way. This reference was removed, preventing confusion that arose with the original version of the rules. The third chapter details feats. A majority of these feats are updates of feats from Mindscapes: The only feats you will find missing from the update are Inertial Armor Redux which is no longer appropriate since in the Expanded Psionics HandbookInertial Armor became a power instead of a feat and Psychic Specialization owing to hyperconsciouus of the weapon specialization feat from the psychic warrior’s repertoire.

Examples of feats from previous volumes for those not familiar with them are as follows: This feat allows a psionic character to temporarily forego the use of a power to gain a temporary boost in power points.

Essentially unaltered other than to accommodate explorationx renaming of the required feat Inner Power to Psionic Talent in the XPHas the XPH psion is not underpowered as the original, this feat is both less essential and less potent than it once was, but remains an attractive choice. I was surprised to see this feat reappear, as its role was relegated to overchannel in the XPH. In Hyperconsciousthis feat has been transformed into an extended version of Overchannelallowing you to access higher effective manifester levels albeit at an even greater cost in terms of damage.

This makes the feat seem very costly to me and not very appealing, especially since it also requires overchannel. Such a feat seems to me only likely to be sought out by players seeking obscure power combinations, which is hyperconsvious the sort of mechanic I prefer to hyperconecious from my games.

This feat adds elemental damage to a non-elemental power, with no cost similar to some eldritch feats from Book of Eldritch Might. Hyyperconscious feat has become more narrow in this incarnation, requiring the user to select a specific power to which is applies. This power inflicts a morale penalty on enemies struck with a critical hit as a result of a flash of the creature’s death in its mind when struck.

This feat is essentially unchanged since the original version, but now that weapon specialization is no longer part of the psychic warrior, it could become an example of the hypeeconscious of ability that helps differentiate the psychic warrior from the fighter.

It still, however, lacks any mention that this is a mind affecting effect, which it probably should for purposes of creatures likely to be affected by the exploratuons as described. New feats come in four varieties. A number of dream related feats support the adventure dream theme. Latent psi feats grant simple psionucs abilities to the characters. Finally, there are a few new feats related to dorje such as dorje bladewhich allows the user to wield a dorje as a club-like weapon, with the possibility to discharge on a critical hit.

Finally, a few metapsionic feats that never made it to the XPH are brought up-to-date here such as persistent power. The fifth chapter regards psionic items. Again, most of the entries are updates or supporting the adventure. Dreamstained items are cheap psionic items with a price that play a pivotal role in the adventure. Psicrystal staves and synaptic masks make a return from Mindscapes. Psicrystal hypetconscious feel a bit odd now, given that hpyerconscious crowns fill the niche of staves in the XPH.

That said, I was glad to see them included for the basic concept of the psicrystal staff is more than just a psionic version of a magical staff. They can be used to expllrations a psionic character’s psicrystal.

They can then be upgraded and customized by the addition of a number of companion stones. The sixth chapter follows a similar pattern. All creatures in Mindscapes: New creatures are, again, primarily in support of the adventure, such as the Bayard solidified astral construct made used by the astral dragoon prestige class, and example of which appears in the adventure and the reflexion template that created a nightmare version of a real creature.

There is one new creature that does not appear in the adventure, the mind grub collective. The new powers again follow this pattern, and considering that the nature of powers were most radically changed of any part of the psionics system in XPH, demanded the most significant upgrades.

I hyperconwcious concerned that many of these powers would simply not receive an augment option, but actually Cordell did a pretty thorough job here. Expkorations an example, where appropriate, similar powers of different levels were combined.

For example, adimantify, mineralize, mithrilize, and metallizeall of which harden the psion’s skin, granting DR, were combined into the alloyed hide power. Some other powers that had no previous scaling like avaunt psionjcs provides intimidate bonuses now provide increased benefits with the expenditure of additional power points.

Cordell even uses Hyperconscious as a route for some quickened errata or variants for existing powers. The unofficial pssionics of the XPH psionicd power appears here.

One thing from the older books you won’t see here is a repeat of the If Thoughts Could Kill spell-to-power conversion.

Hyperconscious: Explorations in Psionics – D&D Wiki

Arguably, this isn’t needed anymore given how much attention psion powers have received since then, but it does present a bit of a problem if you wish to run the excellent If Thoughts Could Kill adventure, which relies on some of these conversions if the players don’t play their cards right.

Prestige classes also follow the book formula of updating previous material and supporting the adventure. All of the prestige classes from Mindscapes: A Psion’s Guide and If Thoughts Could Kill are updated here, and all of the remaining prestige classes appear in the adventure in some capacity. Most of the new prestige classes such as the Awakened Dreamer, Dream Keeper, and Dreamwright follow the adventure’s dream theme.

Other classes merely make cameos in the adventure. For example, the Astral Dragoon is a specialized rider that calls their mount from the stuff of the astral sort of like the PHB’s paladin’s mount, but it makes sense. TheQuietus is sort of a psionic assassin specialized in using telepathic attacks, most particularly mind thrust.

The mechanics are a little odd on this one, as it seems as if as written, as at high levels, the quietus is quite likely to inflict more damage with a mind thrust if the victim makes the requisite saving throw than if they fail it. The prestige classes chapter also has a few Expanded Psionics Handbook variants.

Some tweaks are suggested for the pyrokineticist, and a new prestige class, the blade manifesterprovides a soulknife character with some psionic powers. The former tweak seems fine while the latter to me misses the point. I do feel that the soulknife class from the XPH is a flawed idea, but the problem as I see it is that the class is inherently a specialized concept. The class itself should be a prestige class; making a more psionic prestige class does nothing to mend the conceptual issues of having the soulknife as a core class.

The most significant and needed tweak offered here is the much maligned metamind. The metamind variant presented here gets better cognizance crystal abilities sooner, and received more manifester level advancements.

In the stead of the harsh manifester level advancement, the metamind is required to sequester powers, similar to the feat described aboving, meaning that the metamind is very focused, but has access to more potent powers and receives a much better benefit in terms of psionic power. Conclusions As a stand alone adventure, Hyperconsious is a competent adventure, and expands nicely on Cordell’s Dark Plea idea.

Considering the significant nature of the upgrades to the psionics system in the XPH, an upgrade of the Malhavoc material was compulsory if you want to use it. Those who already own this material will not find much new, but may feel compelled to pick up the updates, though Malhavoc has made this more manageable if you aren’t afraid to go the PDF route, allowing you to pick up just the new material if you already have the upgrades of the old books. The mindscapes system is the only system for a psionic combat system now that the XPH has ditched the core psionic combat system.

Such a system helps keep the role of psionics distinct in the game and provides some flavorful options.

That said, the mindscapes system required little upgrading to use with the XPH. Overall, if you are comfortable with the XPH material but don’t have the Malhavoc psionics material yet, Hyperconscious provides some interesting additions that are better balanced than anything currently written for psionics. If you are already using Malhavoc’s psionics materials, there is a good chance you know if you want these, because you have been waiting impatiently for the upgrade.
