At first, Tigress couldn't place the dominoes correctly, often breaking the fragile wooden tiles in her incredibly strong grip, which frustrated her. But Shifu was a calm and patient teacher, and over time he instructed her to control her temper and her strength, teaching her the importance of discipline.
Their training lasted for months until she was able to complete her goal of self control. This later led to his decision of adopting her, presumably missing his teacher-student relationship he once had with former student and adoptive son Tai Lung.
After Secrets of the Furious Five, as seen through another flash back, this time from the first film, even in her new home, Tigress still felt unaccepted due to Shifu's closed and often stern personality, caused by the betrayal of Tai Lung.
She also formed an aversion to asking questions, as she had been ridiculed by others for her childlike curiosity in the past. As the years passed, Tigress strove to gain Shifu's approval by bettering herself in kung fu and becoming a strong and dedicated student. One of the many ways of training she endured was punching the iron-wood trees outside the Jade Palace, an exercise that eventually resulted in her having no feeling in her paws.
In another short film, "Secrets of the Scroll", Tigress is a teenager who is training under the strict Master Shifu, who tries to get her to emulate his style. However, Tigress is not Shifu, and her tiger instincts keep getting the better of her, making Shifu frustrated and in term making Tigress shamed. Throughout the short, Tigress is trying to impress Shifu, even insisting on fetching the four warriors that Shifu had asked for due to his illness preventing him from protecting the valley from the villain, Boar.
However, due to a mixup involving the scroll given her by Shifu and one written and then throne away by Po, she ended up recruiting four strangers instead of the warriors Shifu had requested aka the current furious fiveand while with them she was able to discover a bit more of her true potential. However, once she and the group returned, Shifu's fury of her failure to bring him the right warriors forced him to openly say he was disappointed in her, crushing Tigress's spirits even more than ever.

While Tigress was hurt and confused, Oogway counseled Tigress that she had to be herself and couldn't expect to be just like Shifu. In the Movies Now an adult, Tigress has taken full advantage of her skills and her special style of Kung Fu, making her one of the most skilled and powerful Kung Fu masters in China. In KFP 1 Despite all the progress she achieved over the years, Tigress still felt the need to prove herself to Shifu, and saw her chance one day when Master Oogway had a vision of Tai Lung breaking out of prison and returning to the Valley to get the Dragon Scroll, in which there would be a tournament to decide which of the five would be the New Dragon warrior.
And as we all know, Tigress never got to display her power in the tournament because Po had already been chosen as the dragon warrior. Of course, out of everyone witnessing, Tigress was by far the most frustrated by this, as she had trained for years to be the best warrior she could be, and to suddenly get shoved aside for a random panda would almost be too much to bare. Because of this, she developed a large grudge on Po throughout most of the film, eyeing him with looks of hate and intimidation.
After hearing the about the death of Oogway and the destiny of Po, Tigress left the Jade Palace to confront Tai Lung on her own, saying; "This is what you trained me for" Tigres's leave of the Jade Palace and Fighting Tai Lung However, even with the aid of the other Furious Five members, she could not defeat Tai Lung and had to be carried back to the palace, paralyzed by his deadly nerve attack. When Po also tries talking about his problems with his father, Mr. Ping, they are interrupted by the arrival of Li Shan, Po's biological father, who breaks Po's dumpling-eating record at the restaurant.
After recognizing each other, Po and Li Shan bond, much to Mr. Shortly after bringing his father to the Jade Palace and introducing him to his friends, the Valley of Peace is attacked by living jade statues referred to as "Jombies" by Po and Monkey resembling kung fu masters both past and present. After the statues retreat, Po and the others learn that they were sent by Kai, a ferocious warrior who was once Master Oogway's ally.
From Oogway's journal's they learn that Kai and Oogway learned the secrets of chi from the pandas from Li Shan's village some years prior. Oogway then banished Kai to the Spirit Realm after Kai tried to take the pandas' powers of chi for himself. As Kai can only be defeated by a master of chi, Po decides to learn the power of chi on Li's suggestions as it was an innate ability of the inhabitants of the panda village.
Po is told however that he must learn to live like a panda, which he takes to upon arriving in the village and is glad to be a part of.
Later on, Tigress arrives at the Panda Village, revealing that Kai has taken the chi of all the kung fu masters including Shifu, Crane, Mantis, Viper and Monkey, she is the only one to escape and that Kai has destroyed the Jade Palace. Terrified, Li begins evacuating the village while Po demands to be taught how to utilize chi. Li then admits he lied about knowing how to use chi in order to bring his son home and that all the pandas have forgotten how to use the ability.
Hurt by his father's deception, Po isolates himself and trains rigorously to fight Kai, with his self-doubt returning.
After talking with Tigress and discovering that Li and the other Pandas have decided to stay and help, Po trains the village to use kung fu. When Kai attacks the village with his jade army, Po's unorthodox forces and tactics initially gain the upper hand. Kai then defeats Po and prepares to take his chi.
In a last-ditch effort to save his companions, Po grabs onto Kai and sends them both to the Spirit Realm where they battle again and Kai prepares to take Po's chi.
