For Al, life is a bitter pill. The cathedral, the most obvious symbol, shows unity and common belief. At different points both the mpther and father cathedrald breaks and get annoying calls. We need desperately to learn from each other and experience beauty in each other.

For reasons that become increasingly clear to me as I age, Raymond Carver will always be my short story God. He finally lets go of his self-preoccupation and crusty cathedralls and has a direct experience of that other side of life, the one beyond ego, beyond judgements, beyond all categories, life as boundless awareness.


The narrator is clearly unhappy about the upcoming visit. It was totally to make the point about the ignorance of a sighted person, allied with a clumsy metaphor for being on the same level.

You certainly do get to know people very well indeed when you talk nonstop for three quarters of an hour or more. But she and the blind man had kept in touch. Carver has been mostly a writer of strong but limited effects – the sort of writer who shapes and twists his material to a high point of stylization. I was in my house.
