Return to Book Page. The Unavowable Community by Maurice Blanchot. The problem, for Blanchot, is that the very terms of an ideal community make an avowal of membership in it a violation of inconfedable terms themselves. This meditation ranges from the problematic effects of a defect in language to actual historical experiments in community.

The latter involves the life and comuniad of George Bataille whose concerns e. Taking as his point of departure an essay by French philosopher Jean-Luc Nancy, Blanchot appears once again as one of the most attentive readers of what is truly challenging in French thought.

His deep interest in the fiction of Marguerite Duras extends this inquiry to include The Community of Lovers, emerging from certain themes in Duras recit, The Malady of Death. As Blanchot s first direct treatment of a subject that has long figured in or behind his work, this small but highly concentrated book stands as an important addition to his own contribution to literary, philosophical, social, and political thought, figuring as it does at the center of the emerging concern for a redefinition of politics and community.

Due to the principle of incompleteness, setting up this concept would mean that the explanation of a completed status is no longer necessary. Additionally, the absence of community is not the failure of community: It then follows a chapter discussing a relation related to life and death of each one in a community.

Such is, such would be the friendship that discovers the unknown we ourselves are, and the meeting of our own solitude which, precisely, we cannot be alone to experience.

Death is itself the true community of mortal beings: It takes upon itself the impossibility of its own immanence, the impossibility of a communitarian being as subject. However, by enunciating it he has not been able to impose silence on himself, which means, he has to talk in order to remain silent.

The Community of Lovers part starts with a quotation from J. The sole law of abandonment, like the law of love, is to be without return and without recourse. For “the true world of lovers”, he places the opinion – that it is a world that is the oblivion of the world: As love, which may impose its requirements on a circle as taking on the form of the impossibility of loving: Apr 19, Jeff rated it really liked it Shelves: Very difficult read in some ways, but more accessible I found than J.

I particularly enjoyed his reflections on May in the second section. Jan 21, Alex Obrigewitsch rated it liked it. Not the best Blanchot has to offer, but surely not bad. A spiraling attempt at speaking of that which cannot be spoken of, which evades all avowal; the communital relation.

I don’t know what it is with me and Blanchot, but most of his writing just feels incredibly timid and equivocal.
