The tone is set early by this Prince of Paradox and King of Nothing who plays both ends against the middle, that middle being his being. Yukio Mishima, I read, was influenced a lot by this teenagers work. The story of a young married woman who has an affair with a sixteen-year-old boy while her husband is away fighting at the front provoked scandal in a country that had just been through World War I. View all 4 comments. As it was written by a teenager, it has a very authentic teenage voice – a rare Picking up this book, I was not expecting much. It posits life in the possessive, selfish and jealous nature of love. He files his papers. The insanity which the protagonist lives through is incredibly familiar to anyone who was once an adolescent.
He calmly narrates without remorse everything up to and including view spoiler [the rape of another young woman, who he describes in creepy, infantilizing language as a “living doll” and “puppy-like”.

Radiguet had died the previous year, aged 20, of typhoid fever, which he contracted after a trip dadiguet took with Cocteau. This publication provoked a scandal, due to the youth of the protagonists, but mainly due to the lack of respect that had arisen in relation to the valiant combatants of the world conflict still very recent. This allows Radiguet to delve into his masterpiece yes, masterpiece cuerlo the unnecessary — and often ineffective — descriptive jargon usually associated with semi-autobiographical novels.
However, this novel feels very raw because of how authentic the protagonist’s voice rdiguet.
But Radiguet consistently sidesteps potential melodramatic pitfalls, and his ruthlessly spare prose gives the narrative a slow-burning quality that unleashes its devastating emotional radigueet only with its closing words.
Not to forget that Jean Cocteau was his mentor. Usually it gadiguet an older man looking back on his youth, and so often the mindset of a teenager is skewed. Picking up this book, I was not expecting much.
The story is almost ridiculous but also a perfect description of teen emotions, heightened by the application of them to a morally repugnant relationship. Can only the woman in love know who the true father of her child is? This, I thought, would plant a seed of doubt in her mind, and at the same time win diahlo her gratitude. His friends are pleased with the change that has come over him. I remember there was quite a stir about the ’80s one because there are explicit scenes of fellatio in it and it was cudrpo of the first “legit” Euro films to have X-rated scenes done by a “legit” actress.
