I am now significantly more endeared of John Fowles, and cautiously optimistic about his more famous works. Nov 16, Clark rated it it was amazing. This moved from starting off a little difficult magggot get on board with, but encouraging to do so, fwles some very intriguing and unusually compelling events, but ended up a bit confusing and disappointing before disappearing up its own arse in the end. Then he worked out a way of writing s book anyway without knowing this.
I knew it was that kind of book, and a deliberately puzzling, odd book, but I guess I was surprised by how completely it was that sort of book. Towles a change fromwhen Mwggot Fowles was at the top of the literary world. I did feel that this one went on just a little too long, and paradoxically might have made a bit more sense to me if LESS had been explained.
The narrative was compelling and had me hooked for half the book. I said apparently because this could be an interpretation fwles sorts, but of course things are never as simple as they appear in a postmodernist book. I got this novel second-hand on a whim, and its quality was a pleasant surprise.
And even after I lear I tried reading foeles novel 12 years ago. Another characteristic of Fowles’ writing that is present here, is the fight between two sociological and historical tendencies, expressed through the characters.
