Anf one is looking for a stream of artistic achievement with a particularly strong relationship to the Middle Way, this seems like one well worth following as a source of inspiration. Like most of Hesse’s works, the main theme of this book is the wanderer’s struggle to find himself, as well as the Jungian union of polar opposites Mysterium Coniunctionis.

The characters are types in this book but also come alive as individuals. Myself, I prefer the spare prose style of Siddartha.

Could someone please tell me if this book is worth reading, if I previously enjoyed both Siddhartha and Steppenwolf? Did anybody have this sense of immaturity of the main character godlmund think that women were not represented in this story? Antony I bought this because it was the only Hesse at the store they had that I haven’t read yet and it’s great so far.

Goldmund became an artist, which pleases Narcissus: I loved Hesse when I was younger and read pretty much whatever I could get hold of much more than seems to be in print now. These “feminine” and “masculine” qualities are drawn from the Jungian archetypal structure, and is reminiscent of some of his earlier works, especially Demian.
