Katherine Anne "Kate" Austen is a fictional character on the ABC television series Lost, played Kate is involved in a love triangle with Jack and Sawyer (Josh Holloway) and is seen as She reunited with her high-school sweetheart, Dr. Tom Brennan (Mackenzie Astin), who arranged a meeting between Kate and Diane.
They are ambushed, gagged, tied up and taken to a pier. When Jack contacts her via Pickett's radio, informing her that she has a head-start to escape, she and Sawyer run towards the beach.
They head into the jungle and find Rousseau, who agrees to help them after learning of Alex's status. There they confront the Other Mikhail and take him hostage. When they are alone, Jack explains to Kate that he has made a deal with The Others. In exchange for saving Ben's life, Jack will be allowed to return home.
He promises Kate that he will come back for her and the rest of their friends. But Locke blows up the Other's submarine before Jack can leave. They eventually return to the beach with Jack and Sayid. Later, she learns of Naomi 's arrival. En route, Sawyer tells Kate that he's turning back to help the survivors on the beach. Kate wants to go with him, but Sawyer won't let her, and Jack defends Sawyer's actions, knowing that Sawyer is trying to protect Kate.
When Kate asks why he is sticking up for Sawyer because she knows Sawyer would never stick up for Jack, Jack replies that it's because he Jack loves her.

They eventually encounter Ben and Alex in the jungle, at which point Ben is taken hostage. After a confrontation between Jack and Locke, Kate decides to stay with Jack, but questions Sawyer when he decides to go with Locke.
Later, they come across Daniel Faradaywhom they believe has arrived to rescue them. Upon learning of the location of the final team member, Charlotte Staples LewisKate accompanies Sayid and Miles to the barracks.
They are eventually captured by Locke. She arranges for him to speak to Ben, but is caught by Locke. She spends the night with Sawyer although they did not have sex and tells him that she is not pregnant. They argue over his exaggerated show of relief. Sawyer accuses her of bouncing back and forth between him and Jack. Kate slaps him on the face and then heads back to the beach. Later, Sayid and Kate follow Jack and Sawyer to avoid them being attacked by the boat's soldiers.
They meet up with the remaining Others and join forces to defeat the boat's soldiers. They all board Lapidus' helicopter, but as they travel back to the freighter a fuel leak is discovered, and after all the excess weight is thrown out, Sawyer kisses Kate, then asks her to do a favor for him back home and jumps out.
Jack testifies on her behalf as a character witness. He lies under oath and tells the court that it was Kate that saved him and the other survivors.
Under cross-examination, he is asked whether he loves the defendant and he replies "Not anymore. Kate's mother, the prosecution's star witness, tries to reconcile with Kate, and then decides not to testify.
She is consequently released on ten years probation, provided that she does not leave California. She invites him to come home with her, but he hesitates because he is not ready to see Aaron his nephew again. In " Something Nice Back Home ", Kate is seen living in an established relationship with Jack, who is also acting as a surrogate father for his nephew Aaron. Later, Jack asks Kate to marry him, which she happily accepts.
Jack later confronts Kate about her "errands", which involved her meeting with Sawyer's daughter; Clementine and his ex-girlfriend Cassidy. Kate refuses to tell Jack any details about this, as she knows Sawyer would not want anybody else to know. Jack is angered by her secrecy and raises his voice, waking Aaron up. Kate rushes to comfort him then Jack leaves, paranoid, ending their relationship.
Jack then tells her that they need to return to the island, but Kate grows furious and leaves. Norton refuses to tell Kate who his client is, and Kate refuses to give him a blood sample. Kate visits Sun, who convinces her to go see Norton and try to get him to reveal who his client is. Kate leaves Aaron in Sun's care while visiting Norton's firm, but cannot get a name out of him. Kate and Jack follow Norton to his clients house, who turns out to be Claire's mother. Jack goes in to talk to her and then realizes that she isn't the client they were looking for.
When approached by Ben later, Kate discovers that he was the one who was trying to get a blood sample from her. Kate realizes that she is not supposed to raise Aaron and leaves him in the care of Claire's mother.
She goes to Jack's apartment and they spend the night together. She returns to the island with the other survivors on flight Sawyer explains that the year is and secretly gets her, Jack and Hurley to join the Dharma Initiative.
After refusing to aid Jack in his plans to detonate the hydrogen bomb, Kate returns to the Dharma Initiative, to then be put on the Dharma sub with Sawyer and Juliet.
However, she insists that the three leave the submarine to prevent Jack from detonating the bomb. When the three return to the island, they eventually reunite with Jack, Jin, Sayid and Hurley. Although Sawyer tries to persuade Jack not to use the bomb, his efforts are in vain and they fight.
Kate tells Jack that if he really believes that detonating the bomb is the best thing, then she will help him, while Sawyer reluctantly agrees to go along with the plan after Juliet also takes Jack's side. Kate assists Jack in getting the bomb to the required location, but when he drops it down a tunnel, it does not go off, despite the fact that it is supposed to explode on impact.
Jack, Kate, Sawyer and Juliet are shocked, but immediately, the Dharma drill that had been drilling deep into the pocket of magnetic energy that Jack was trying to contain went too far, and Juliet is ultimately dragged down the tunnel, into the source of the energy. Kate and Sawyer try to get her out but the strength of the magnetism is too much and she is pulled into the tunnel. Kate attempts to remove a distressed Sawyer from the scene along with Jack, unaware that Juliet remains conscious for now and desperately attempts to detonate the bomb, eventually succeeding.
Season 6[ edit ] Kate continues her mission to reunite Claire with Aaron. When she eventually finds her, she discovers that a dark side has grown in Claire, who has become unstable due to many years of living alone, in the belief that the others are holding her son hostage in a Temple. Sawyer escapes from the Temple and Kate follows him to apologize for the loss of Juliet and to ask him to help her find Claire. Sawyer assures Kate she is not to blame, and reveals his intention to propose to Juliet.

Kate breaks down, and ultimately returns to the Temple to get Claire. When Kate joins the Man in Black's camp, after Claire learns that it was Kate who took Aaron and attempts to murder Kate by throwing her to the ground and pulling a knife on her.
Kate is saved by 'Locke' and seeing that Kate is upset by the loss of Claire's friendship, warns her that Claire should not be reunited with Aaron as she is now 'crazy'. Claire later tearfully apologises for her actions and thanks Kate for keeping her son safe.
Kate, who has since grouped up with 'Locke' plans a breakout from the Man in Black's party, Kate wants to bring Claire but Sawyer refuses, saying she is no longer the friend they once knew following her attack on Kate. When Claire sees them leaving her behind again she gives chase and holds them at gunpoint just as they attempt to board a boat to escape. Kate talks Claire around, convincing her to come with them so she can finally go home to her son. The group try to leave on Widmore's sub, and Kate is shot through the right collarbone.
Once on board, while Jack is tending to Kate's wound, they discover that the Man in Black has placed a C4 explosive on board. Sawyer inadvertently causes the timer to count down faster and Sayid, Jin and Sun are killed in the resulting explosion.
It should be noted that Kate, who has gone by numerous aliases in the past Annie, Maggie, Monica, Lucytells Jack her real name. They are interrupted by sounds of the Monster shortly thereafter. First, she screams Jack's name. When he doesn't answer, she uses the advice he gave her about fear and counts to five to regain her courage. But when she asks him to end the Marshal's sufferings by killing him, Jack responds negatively and tells Kate "I am not a murderer.
This is often considered the first major rift in their relationship. He declines, saying that who they were before the crash doesn't matter; that they should all be able to start over.
She asks him where he was, to which he replies: Their flirting is observed by Charlie, who memorably refers to it as "verbally copulating" and then as an "inside joke.
While Kate has lost her shirt, Jack doesn't seem to mind their relative undress, only putting his own shirt back on when Locke and Charlie find them. She notices Jack watching her and asks him if he's checking her out. Jack replies that he isn't, but that "Trust me, if I was checking you out, you'd know it. Jack laughs, then asks rhetorically if he is still in high school. Hurley points out that this is a denial.
Sawyer is simultaneously teasing Kate about Jack's apparent affections for her. Kate, irritated, tells him that he "had [his] chance to know. The overlapping editing in the final moments of the episode, of mirror images of both Jack and Kate looking into their seperate fires, is overlaid with the song lyrics "But look around you.
Take a good look. Just between you and me. Are you sure this is where you want to be?

She runs to the caves and works harder than any of the others to try and free him Michael at one point tells her she will likely perish at the pace she is maintaining. She runs to him and envelops him in a desperate hug, which is considered their first major romantic encounter. When she later offers to talk to Sawyer instead, explaining that she could get through to him because Sawyer "thinks [they] have a connection," Jack asks if she does.
Kate replies with a sardonic "Please. When Kate gets to the scene she tells Jack that she doesn't recognize him because she's smiling.
Jack approaches and asks what she's doing, and she merely says "I'm sinking. When he comes to, Kate is on top of him, in hysterics over him potentially being dead. When he asks her what's in the case, she lies to him, saying that it's just guns. When they dig up the Marshal, Kate grabs his wallet and tries a slight of hand trick on Jack but he catches her, and is obviously disappointed.
After some coersion Kate finally admits that the plane belonged to the man she loved and "killed. Their last shared scene in this episode is Jack walking past Kate who is seated by the fire, unmoving. He stops a little while past her and looks back, and when we see his face again, Jack appears to be tormented. She calls him out on it, and he playfully asks her what she's doing. She puts some seeds in his hand and he asks her if they are, "Gross little grayish yellow thingies? This leads her to show him her and Sun's garden.
He puts something in there and she asks if they're "Gross little grayish yellow thingies" to which he replies "Oh no, no, no.
These are slimy little bluish black thingies. Kate's pissed, but Sawyer is there to 'save the day' with the Marshal's gun. Thankfully, Jack reminds him that it was the gun he shot the Marshal with and missed. Kate thanks Jack for the loaner and he replies "Always a pleasure.
Kate says she can get it back, and Jack says that the last time she tried that she made out with him and he still didn't have what they wanted. Jack tells her to forget about the gun because he doesn't want her to owe Sawyer anything. He looks at her fondly, saying that he didn't do it for Sawyer. After he falls asleep, she watches him for a few moments. She is there when he wakes up. She then enquires about the raft, and Jack asks her if she poisoned Michael.
Kate is hurt and asks if he thinks she's capable of doing something like that. He sadly replies that he doesn't know what she's capable of. Kate walks away, visibly upset. Kate smiles and says that Jack is good at keeping secrets referring to her past crimes only he knows about. Unfortunately, Jack pulls the long stick, leaving Kate and Locke to carry the explosives.

The backpack in fact had no explosives in it at all, as Jack switched their packs when Kate wasn't looking in order to carry the dynamite himself. Season 2 2x01 "Man of Science, Man of Faith" - Jack steps up to his role as a leader of the Losties and gives them a reassuring speech, despite having to tell them that they can't possibly all move inside the newly-opened hatch. Later that night, when he's alone, Kate comes to find him and asks if he really believes everything is going to be OK, like he told the camp.
They joke about the fact that such optimism is uncharacteristic for Jack.
She then tells him that he told everyone exactly what they needed to hear and that he does a great job at taking care of them all. She makes him understand that they'd probably all be lost without him and that includes her.
They exchange tender looks after which she tells him that she's going into the hatch, to make sure Locke doesn't get hurt. She says it's "Live together, die alone," referring to Jack's classic speech from "White Rabbit". Both seem a little embarrassed and have a slightly flirtatious exchange as Kate retrieves her clothes. Jack grins as he watches her leave to get dressed. Kate and Jack share a meal and flirt together.
They flirt and she ends up challenging him to a round of golf, "to see which one of them is more accurate. Eko carrying a badly wounded Sawyer. This is yet another "Jinterruption. She tells him that she's sorry for having taken off like that. When Jack expresses doubt about the sincerity of her apology, Kate snaps, shouting to him that she's sorry she's "not as perfect" as him, "not as good.
Kate makes to run away, but he grabs her forearm and pulls her close to him. She begins to sob and tells him that the Island is driving her nuts. Without warning, she then kisses Jack passionately.
She finally pulls back, seemingly shocked by her actions, and runs off into the jungle.
Jack is left calling after her, looking dazed and confused. Kate is pissed and reminds him that she can fire a gun and track but Jack adamantly says no, saying they need someone to push a button, and walks away with Sawyer and Locke. Kate, disappointed and upset, watches them leave. Friendly and The Others, who are holding Kate as a hostage. When Tom takes the sack off of Kate's head, Jack is clearly shaken. Tom tells Jack that he'll pass Kate over as long as they give up their guns and promise to keep to themselves.
Jack finally concedes, and Tom lets her go and leaves. Jack asks Kate if she's OK, but you can tell that he's pissed off about the whole situation. She then apologizes for going and asks Jack to just talk to her for a second. Jack says that he's sorry too and walks away from her.
Sawyer quips that Jack's giving her the "twenty dollar tour" and implies that the two of them aren't just going on a hike.
Kate watches, the jealousy evident on her face as Sawyer keeps talking.
